Starting from May 20, 2023, real-time fuel and energy consumption data will be collected during periodic vehicle inspections. The data collection applies to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles registered on or after January 1, 2021. Fully electric vehicles are not included in the data collection. Initially, data collection will be limited to taxis, and by 2025, it will expand to cover passenger cars and light commercial vehicles inspected on a regular cycle.

The goal of the European Union is to monitor actual consumption data of vehicles, and the upcoming data collection is based on an implementing regulation by the European Commission. The data will be read from the vehicle’s internal OBFCM hardware during the OBD test conducted during the inspection. The collected data will not be stored at the inspection stations; instead, it will be transmitted to Traficom, which will send the information annually to the European Environment Agency.
